Although there are four books that speak of Jesus, only Matthew and Luke broach the subject of Jesus’ birth and how it came about.

“This is how the birth of Jesus came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man, and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” Matt. 1:18-20.

The above bible account attempts to portray a noble scene in which before they (Mary and Joseph) come together, Joseph finds Mary to be pregnant with child through the Holy Spirit and, being a righteous man, Joseph intends to divorce her quietly so as to avoid exposing her to public disgrace, a viable solution based on the law given to Moses which states: “If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man…” Deut. 24:1-2. In other words, Joseph could have divorced Mary without revealing that she was pregnant [through the Holy Spirit] before marriage.

Joseph, however, decides not to divorce Mary after a dream in which “…an angel of the Lord appeared and said ‘Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.’” Matt. 1:20. Further, Matthew 1:24-25 states “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she had given birth to a son. And he named him Jesus.”

There are significant inconsistencies in the above account, a few of which are cited below:

  1. If Joseph, knowing already that Mary was pregnant through the Holy Spirit, had decided to get rid of her, why would he change his mind when subsequently informed of the same information in his dream?
  2. According to the account in Matthew, the god of the bible did not inform Joseph before impregnating his would-be-wife. But as soon as Joseph decided to divorce Mary, an angel of the god of the bible appeared. It follows then, that had Joseph not known about Mary’s secret pregnancy before marriage and thought of divorcing her, the angel of the god of the bible would not have appeared to Joseph even in a dream.
  3. Is it right on the part of the so-called god of the bible to impregnate Joseph’s would-be-wife without his knowledge? What would have happened to Mary if Joseph had not married her? – She would have given birth to Jesus, and the Jewish people, in accordance with their law, would have stoned her death for getting pregnant outside marriage.
  4. Joseph did not have sexual relations with Mary until after she gave birth to Jesus. Consider: When Jesus twelve years old, he was missing in Jerusalem, and was found three days later in the temple courts. “When his parents saw him they were astonished. His mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.’ ‘Why were you searching for me?’ he asked. ‘Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?’ But they [Mary and Joseph] did not understand what he was saying to them.” Luke 2:48-50.

Joseph knew that Jesus’ father was the Holy Spirit and he married Jesus’ mother in a righteous act in order to protect her from public disgrace, and further did not have any sexual relations with her until after Jesus was born and then called him Jesus as he was commanded by the angel. Yet, when asked by Jesus “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” he did not understand; The bible says that not only Joseph but also Jesus’ mother did not understand. This is a statement that is impossible to be true.

Let us have a look at what Luke has to say regarding the events soon after Mary’s impregnation:

“And Mary said, ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.’ And the angel departed from her. And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And I came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost; And she spake out with a loud voice and said, ‘Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.’ Luke 1:38-42)

Based on the above account from Luke, it is Elisabeth rather than Joseph who is the first to learn of the secret pregnancy of Mary; subsequently, Mary, who is engaged to Joseph (and is now three months pregnant), returns to her home and it is only after this that Mary and Joseph got married. This, however, cannot be the case because Mary would have given birth to Jesus only six months after her marriage and the people would have realized that she had gotten pregnant before marriage and that the father of her child was not Joseph – Mary would have been publicly disgraced anyway, nullifying any aspect of righteousness on the part of Joseph in marrying her.

Consider: If Mary from Nazareth of Galilee, after getting pregnant, hurried to a city in Juda to meet the elderly and six-months pregnant Elisabeth, how could it come about that Joseph, having no clue as to what was happening, would consider divorcing Mary? Did the elderly Elisabeth, herself six months pregnant, run miles from Juda to Nazareth to inform Joseph of his would-be-wife’s pregnancy? No, according to the bible, Mary stayed with Elisabeth for a period of three months: Luke 1:56 “And Mary abode with her (Elisabeth) about three months.” The only other person on the scene is Zachariahs, the husband of the elderly Elisabeth, who had been rendered dumb by the angel Gabriel: Luke 1:20 “And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until that day that these things shall be performed.” Can one imagine the old man, Zachariahs, running to Joseph, the would-be-husband of Mary, and informing him through gestures that Mary had been impregnated by the Holy Spirit? !

Therefore, if it is the case that Joseph knew of Mary’s pregnancy by the Holy Spirit before his marriage, the account of Mary visiting Elisabeth for three months soon after her impregnation is a blatant lie – the so-called ‘holy’ bible does not relate the truth even in the account of the very birth of Jesus.
